Foundations

Publié le par Bertrand Ricque

Time has come for me to go back to foundations and thus to Rudyard Kipling.

If you can keep your head when all about you,
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good or talk too wise:

If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear the words you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them:"Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a man, my son!

Worldcompany

On the other side of our world (as we are on the other side of their world), on a desert island (OK, usually it is not desert at all, it is even supposed to be crowded, but now it is the monsoon season), at the single open bar among 4 km of seashore, on my left, the local surfers sing Bob Marley and watch Desperate Housewives at the same time (yes they can !), on my right a table of local guys discussing and having some drinks. Discussing with the bartender, we speak about society games. It appears that he doesn’t know the “mexican” (a French dice game). He finds some dices, calls his friends. 3 hours later we’re still there, with in addition a lonesome Australian woman who stopped counting her Carlsberg cans to join us.

Future and sci-fi

Publié le par Bertrand Ricque

I enjoy reading sci-fi novels. The best are the most plausible. They deal with human and social questions. I started reading sci-fi in 1978. As time goes on, our world looks more and more to what is described in these books.

July the 7th, 2007

I can’t sleep. The hotel on the seaside is fantastic but there is a wedding (Greek, if you follow the blog). It’s something of about 300 persons, mixing archetypes from Jewish weddings with a US logistic, on the Mediterranean Sea. So, there are fireworks. And as yesterday, it was the 7/7/7 there are weddings all along the coast. I can see fireworks until the Turkish border. And I wonder if the Turks are not part of the party. Just in the middle of the airport airspace. But this type of detail doesn’t stop them. Hopefully.

European adaptation

The sight on Samothraki in the sunset was as usual.

The apprentice waiter (16 years old as a maximum) spoke badly English and Greek not at all as he was Bulgarian. His two younger (14) pals were doing it better in Greek. We ended with my (few) remembering of Russian.
